The Mount Carmel Foundation Legacy

The Mount Carmel Foundation family of funds continues a decades-long commitment to enhancing healthcare in Southeast Kansas. Established in 1983 by a group of local residents, the Mount Carmel Foundation served as a pillar of healthcare advancement in Southeast Kansas with a vision to ensure that quality healthcare would remain accessible to the community.

Over the course of four decades, the Foundation raised over $6 million, directly impacting patient care through the funding of cutting-edge technology, critical equipment, and essential programs. Additionally, the Foundation equipped the intensive-care unit, emergency room, and imaging center for women with new technology, refurbished patient rooms, facilitated emergency-room renovations, and assisted in the implementation of 3D mammography.

After careful consideration of the changing landscape of healthcare in Southeast Kansas, in August 2024 the Mount Carmel Foundation’s Board of Directors made the decision to cease operations and transferred the organization’s assets to the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas.

The legacy of the Mount Carmel Foundation and the historic Mount Carmel Hospital is a testament to the power of community, faith, and unwavering dedication to the well-being of others. The visionaries who laid the groundwork for a century of compassionate care will be honored through the legacy funds established at CFSEK. The donations raised over the past decades will stay here in our community to help support a variety of services, programs, and healthcare advancements.

In total, seven funds were created through the gift:

Donors can still support the legacy of the Foundation and the Mount Carmel name by making charitable contributions to any of the funds.
