Southeast Kansas Women Helping Women (WHW) supports women who are suffering and may be in crisis. Women disproportionately live in poverty; in fact, one in seven women in the United States lives in poverty. Additionally, Southeast Kansas is the most impoverished area in our state, with 43.7% of female-led households in Crawford County in poverty.
WHW helps address their needs. Through an application process, which begins with one of our partner agencies, women needing assistance not already available can receive help from the fund. WHW can help with car repair, dental care, major house repairs such as roofing or septic tanks, housing issues, or a host of other possible needs.
We fill in the gaps where existing services can’t. Our funds go directly from the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas to our charitable partner agencies and then to vendors. Our partner agencies must first exhaust all other resources before applying for WHW funds. After grant recipients’ needs have been met, these applicants are encouraged to “pay it forward” and help others as they can.
