Because of his love for American History, William F. Lehman’s daughter, Carolyn Cooper, established a scholarship in his memory.
The William F. Lehman American History Scholarship shall be awarded to a recent or past Bourbon County High School graduate.
The recipient will be planning to attend or is attending an accredited institution of higher learning as a full-time student. Enrollment in at least three hours of coursework per semester of the scholarship award studying any aspect of American history or American Studies is required.
Scholarship requirements
- Applicants must be graduates of a high school located in Bourbon County, Kansas.
- Applicants must have earned at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA in high school.
- Recipients must carry a minimum of 12 hours each semester in an academic program.
- Recipients must enroll in at least three credit hours of American studies each semester.
- The student must maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4-point scale. If the student’s GPA falls below 2.5 for one semester, the student will not receive the scholarship the following semester, except under extenuating circumstances which will be reviewed and decided upon by the advisory Committee.
- One-half of the scholarship will be awarded before the start of the fall semester and one-half at the start of the spring semester, pending scholarship requirements are fulfilled.
- Enrollment verification in required coursework for fall and spring semesters must be provided before payment.
- If the student withdraws from his/her academic program after enrolling and receiving the scholarship money, he/she must return the money awarded for the semester in which the student withdraws.
Scholarship funds will be distributed from the William F. Lehman American History Scholarship Fund through the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas on behalf of the Fort Scott Area Community Foundation.
The number of scholarships and their amounts are determined annually.
