In light of the recent announcement that Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg will be merging with Mercy Hospital, the Mount Carmel Foundation (Foundation) has taken a significant step to ensure the continued support of healthcare services in Pittsburg and the Southeast Kansas region. After multiple meetings with community stakeholders and a thorough evaluation of all options, the Foundation’s Board of Directors has decided to transfer its assets to the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas (CFSEK).
On May 29, 2024, the Board of Directors of the Mount Carmel Foundation, guided by the principles of its Bylaws and existing tax laws, resolved to transfer the assets of the Foundation to CFSEK. The decision reflects a commitment to the Foundation’s mission and ensures that its legacy of enhancing community healthcare will continue to thrive under the stewardship of the Community Foundation.
“The board believes partnering with CFSEK will best serve the Foundation’s mission to support all aspects of healthcare in Southeast Kansas,” said Ashley Long, Mount Carmel Foundation Board President.
Under the new arrangement, the Mount Carmel Foundation board will serve in an advisory role, guiding future gifts and grants for medical and healthcare services through CFSEK. While the Foundation will no longer conduct direct fundraising, its influence and legacy will remain integral to the community’s healthcare support network.
“We are proud to help carry on the legacy of the Mount Carmel Foundation in our community,” said Devin Gorman, CFSEK Executive Director. “The Mount Carmel name will be preserved and will continue to play a vital role in improving healthcare for our community.”
Since its founding, the Mount Carmel Foundation has strived to provide needed funds to assist in the delivery of quality healthcare to the residents of Pittsburg and Southeast Kansas. This dedication remains steadfast, and the Foundation’s board believes that the contributions made by so many donors over the years can continue to be memorialized and enhanced through this new affiliation with CFSEK.
