During the week of November 12-18, 2015, The Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas and its affiliates, Girard Area Community Foundation and Fort Scott Area Community Foundation, will join more than 750 community foundations across America celebrating Community Foundation Week. For 26 years, the effort has raised awareness about the increasingly important role of these philanthropic organizations. Community Foundation Week, created in 1989 by former president George H.W. Bush, recognizes the work of community foundations throughout America and their collaborative approach to working with the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to address community problems.

Celebrating Southeast Kansas Grants
On Tuesday, November 10th, 2015, the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas is hosting its annual Grant Celebration. The celebration will include the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, founders and donors who make charitable giving within our community possible. The evening’s program will recognize 47 agencies and organizations who received a total of $121,700 in grants this year from the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas. The 2015 total amount supporting programs and projects from the Foundation and its affiliates is $151,100.
“Community foundations impact lives, solve problems, and improve futures,” said Kit Parks, Foundation Director. “As many residents struggle with limited resources and a growing need for services, our goal is to bring our community partners together to find effective solutions for challenging social problems in our southeast Kansas region.”
Community foundations build and strengthen communities in a multitude of ways, including providing the means for a wide range of donors to create permanent funds to meet identified needs in communities. Community Foundations have far-reaching benefits for anyone interested in philanthropy. They are located throughout the nation and offer services to all donors, including those of modest means. Donors of all kinds find that community foundations are an ideal fit for their philanthropy, offering people the opportunity to give back to their community. Most people care about their community and making it a better place to live. People can get involved by establishing a fund with a local community foundation, volunteering with an agency the Foundation supports, or serving on an advisory committee in the community….all ways of investing in your community.
According to the Council on Foundations, Community foundations are independent, public entities who build philanthropic cultures. Foundations accept gifts of various sizes and types from private citizens, local corporations, other foundations, and government agencies. Nearly every type of gift—real estate, closely held stock, artwork and insurance—can be contributed to a community foundation. Gifts are made from bequests and by living donors through various types of funds and deferred giving vehicles. Community foundations range greatly in asset size, but all share the common goal of serving donors, nonprofit organizations, and the community as a whole so that charitable gifts are used effectively to impact a community’s critical needs.
